Category:

The Totapuri mango, or Ginimoothi (meaning parrot beak), is a cultivar that is widely grown in South India and is partially cultivated in Sri Lanka. It also goes by the names Bangalora, Collector, Kallamai, Kili Mooku and Sandersha. Totapuri mango skin lacks the usual bitter taste of most mango skins or has a very slight bitterness and is consumed with the flesh traditionally. In addition to a rich aromatic flavour, it is a perfect blend of sweetness and tartness.

Health Benefits:

  • Rich in Nutrients: Totapuri mangoes are a good source of essential nutrients such as vitamins A, C, and E, as well as minerals like potassium and magnesium. These nutrients are vital for maintaining overall health and supporting various bodily functions.
  • High in Fiber: Like most fruits, Totapuri mangoes are rich in dietary fiber, which aids digestion and helps prevent constipation. A diet high in fiber can also promote heart health and regulate blood sugar levels.
  • Boosts Immunity: Totapuri mangoes are packed with vitamin C, an antioxidant that helps strengthen the immune system and protects against infections and diseases. Regular consumption of vitamin C-rich foods like mangoes may help reduce the risk of common illnesses like colds and flu.
  • Supports Eye Health: The high levels of vitamin A in Totapuri mangoes contribute to good vision and eye health. Vitamin A is essential for maintaining proper eye function, preventing night blindness, and reducing the risk of age-related macular degeneration.
  • Promotes Skin Health: The vitamin E content in Totapuri mangoes helps nourish the skin from within and protect it from damage caused by harmful UV rays and environmental pollutants. Including mangoes in your diet may contribute to healthy, radiant skin.
  • Low Glycemic Index: Totapuri mangoes have a relatively low glycemic index compared to other fruits, which means they have a slower impact on blood sugar levels. This makes them a suitable option for individuals with diabetes or those aiming to manage their blood sugar levels.

Storage:

  • Room Temperature: If the mangoes are ripe and you plan to consume them within a few days, store them at room temperature. Keep them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
  • Refrigeration: If you want to extend the shelf life of the mangoes or slow down the ripening process, you can store them in the refrigerator. Place ripe mangoes in the refrigerator’s crisper drawer, where they can stay fresh for up to five days.
  • Separate Storage: Store ripe mangoes away from other fruits and vegetables, as they release ethylene gas, which can accelerate the ripening process of nearby produce.
  • Proper Ventilation: Ensure there is proper ventilation around the mangoes to prevent moisture buildup, which can lead to mold growth. Avoid storing mangoes in sealed plastic bags.
